Volgograd - day two

Day 124 Tuesday 2nd August 2011

Breakfast was a choice of four different selections all in Russian of course. I recognised number two as having rice so we stuck our finger onto selection one and managed to get a plate of fried eggs with bread and some pancakes and jam, not too bad. Coffee was more difficult as they only had packet stuff with milk so I plumped for black chai and Mark had hot water which he used to make a coffee from the jar we have on the bike for when we camp.
9am and it was starting to get warm already so we went back to the monument and spent a couple of hours admiring her huge breasts and taking pictures of her vast armpits from many different angles.
Further down the hill is a monument of what appears to be a mother holding the body of her dead son (very moving) and then a circular pantheon like memorial hall complete with eternal flame and wreaths. This leads further down the hill to some other concrete statues and rousing music all a solid reminder of what went on here some 70 years ago.

On our way back up the hill we re-entered the pantheon and managed to catch the posting of the guards complete with slow goosesteps and they were then left to stand motionless on silent duty. Video of the troops in action....

We spent the rest of the day sorting out our border crossing into Ukraine and we think that we now have a planned route which will avoid entering Moldova so tomorrow takes us to Taganrog by the seaside and about 35 miles from the Ukraine border which we aim to cross on Thursday morning.
