Las Vegas

Day 31  Tuesday 3rd May 2011

There was no wind blowing as we left Hurricane and as the day wore on it just got hotter. We were heading for Las Vegas today and decided to take the Interstate but near Overton we needed to refuel and we came off the freeway and took the 128 and found our petrol station some 5 miles off the main route. However, we also spotted a sign saying Las Vegas could be reached 88 miles more on this back road so we took the decision to carry on.

What a good decision it was too as it led us along the shores of Lake Mead which is set in a State Park and then we took a spur road to the Hoover Dam which at midday was baking hot so we didn’t hang around but we did manage to take a couple of photos.

The bright lights of Las Vegas beckoned. We had already booked Hooters Casino on E Tropicana (just off the Strip) at a whopping £23 per night so we are in for a two nighter at £46.  We found the hotel easily, or I should say that our sat-navs  did and, despite being a few hours early, we were checked in, showered and out walking the Strip in the heat of the late afternoon. We found all the favourites like Ceasars Palace, Flamingo, New York New York, etc etc and we stopped to watch the fountain display at Bellagio.

Bizarre !!

We stepped into the air conditioned MGM casino where we won $10 on the slots but I promptly lost $40 on the roulette table so we gave up gambling for the day and headed for the all you can eat buffet instead where we ate all that we could eat and wished we hadn’t – we were stuffed and ready for an early night but decided to walk it off by revisiting Bellagio’s fountain display in the dark – quite spectacular and rewarding because the “stuffed” feeling was walked off.
