Death Valley

Day 33  Thursday 5th May 2011

It was still fairly warm in the cool of the morning but it soon cooled down as we got moving on the bikes. We took the Interstate 15 south to junction 33 where we found the 160 west which took us to the old western town of Pahrump where we took the 178 into Death Valley.

They say that Death Valley is hot and, trust me, it is !  We rode for around 40 miles or so at around 70 metres below sea level even managing to take a 10 mile one way loop road to see the Artist’s Pallette which is a collection of multi- coloured rocks. As we rose out of the valley we found the 95 north which took us into Tonopah and then a truly wonderful ride up into the snow of the East Sierra Nevada and then down through the pine forest to Mono Lake.

We hit the US395 and headed towards Bridgeport where we checked into the Bridgeport Inn. We had stayed here some 10 years ago whilst on an adventure holiday off-roading on dirt bikes all around this area – it was quite odd to make a return visit but sad to see the once bustling town going the way of many that we had passed through on our stateside journey, downhill with many businesses closed or just hanging on by their fingertips.
