Day 30 Tuesday 2nd May 2011
A quick trip to the ATM at Walmart replenished our dwindling cash and we tootled off a couple of miles down the road to Horseshoe Bend. The car park showed a small trail leading up a sandy dune and we began the ascent in our motorcycle gear. When we got to the top we saw that it was about a third of a mile downhill to the actual site so we made our way to the rim of the precipice which has a sheer drop of some 1200 feet to the Colorado River below. The Horseshoe Bend is a wonderous sight with the turquoise river having carved out a horseshoe shape into the rock as it flowed its course.
The walk back was tortuous and hot with all the gear on and the uphill leg back was much harder on our old bodies than the downhill section out and by the time we reached the bikes we were puffing a bit. Mark wanted to see the rock formations in Antelope Canyon so we rode the five or six miles there and as I was all canyoned out, I let him go off in search of the perfect photograph.
We eventually got to leave the Page area around midday and made our way to Hurricane in Utah which now puts us back into Mountain Time DST and we lost one of the hours that we gained a couple of days ago but the good news is that we get it back again when we go to Nevada tomorrow as we enter the Pacific Time zone.
The Super 8 motel in Hurricane was OK but the nearby JB’s restaurant dished up for me what has been so far the worst meal in the USA so much so that I sent it back. When the owner came out to ask why I didn’t want the food I told her that it bore absolutely no resemblance to the picture of the meal on the menu and she agreed but it sort of went over her head as to why I didn’t want it.
She won though because I ended up with a pot noodle from the garage – so much for principles !
