Fame (But Not Fortune) At Last...

Day 39  Wednesday 11th May 2011

We finished last night off with a chinese meal and a chat and a glass of red wine in the Motel 6 car park courtesy of Mike Rollins from Reno, Nevada and we were joined by our neighbours Dan, a BMW 1200GSA owner (a coastguard) and his pretty wife, Rachel.
The morning was cloudy but, thankfully, dry and warm as we headed north along the Interstate 5 looking for the 42 west  at Roseberg.

We found the route without any problems but  it had to happen... our first day of rain - not bad though because that's over 6,000 miles in the dry in the States.

We were being followed by a Highway Patrol car when the first spots started to hit my visor and it gradually increased into a steady downpour. About 15 miles further on (and still with the lawman in tow) we arrived in a small town called Myrtle Point and the patrol car overtook us and continued on without pulling us over.
We decided to stop a little market shop and had a coffee and a chat with the guy behind the counter.

A short while later a lady came in and went behind the counter and we told her about our trip. We were just leaving when the guy behind the counter rushed out and said "Hang on a minute,  there's a guy in the town, Ron, who has a BMW, he wants to meet you and he’s on his way over now". So we got off the bikes, had another coffee and, while we were waiting, we spoke to another couple from San Francisco who were touring.

Ron Wardman turned up in his Mini Cooper and we had a chat about the trip, the bikes and things in general.  We were saying our goodbyes to Ron when Mary, the local newspaper reporter, showed up and we had our pic taken and she made notes about our story - so fame at last. We will be in the Myrtle Point Herald this week !  Fancy that.
We reached Coos Bay early afternoon and changed into dry clothes. The weather eased a little so we took a walk into the town.  We had just started the return leg back to the motel when the heavens really opened and we had our second soaking of the day. We got back to the hotel, stuck our clothes in front of the heater and caught up with our mail.

My inbox had an email from Ron saying that a group of local bikers want to take us out for dinner – what a great idea.  I rang Ron and it looks like a plan for tomorrow night, we are looking forward to it.
