No Grand Canyon for us

Day 29  Sunday 1st May 2011

The bikers that stayed over in the motel from the night before said their goodbyes as we were loading our bags onto the bikes and they started up their fire breathing dragon monster bikes and rode off into the sun.

Before we left Lake Havasu City we made sure that we took a drive over London Bridge which is not in the middle of the Arizona desert as reported by the media when it was first bought; It sits nicely on the edge of the City and does not look out of place although its length does not look wide enough to have spanned the Thames so I guess it was downsized to fit its new location.
The US 95 took us north to the Interstate 40 which had us jumping onto the old route 66 at Kingman. We travelled along the iconic route as far as Segliman where we had a coffee at the Roadkill cafe and then I bought some stickers for the bike at Angel & Vilma Delgadillo’s shop which is a place I learned about some years ago when I was a Bloodliner (fan of the music of the late John Stewart) but I won’t bore you with the story here.

We pressed on along the I 40 again to Flagstaff where we headed north along the US89 to the town of Page. Our plan was to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but along the route north we saw disconcerting signs which said that the S67 road to the North Rim was closed. We ate at the Canyon King Pizzeria in the evening. The Canyon King was a Mississippi style steamboat which operated on the Colorado River in the 1970’s but when it was decommissioned it was placed on dry land as a restaurant. We asked the owner about the Road Closed signs and he told us that the North Rim doesn’t open until 15th May. We passed the South Rim entrance (which is open) some 150 miles back and we are not going to backtrack so, despite being within a couple of hours ride from the North Rim, we will not get to see the Grand Canyon.

The plan for tomorrow is to ride out and see two other spectacular tourist spots around these parts – The Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon - both heralded as sights not to be missed and all within easy reach of the hotel.

This is our progress thus far..... Click here
