Day 45 Monday 16th May 2011
Finally bit the bullet today and booked our flights to Vladivostok.
We were thinking about flying to Seoul in South Korea and then travelling east across the country to Dong Hae to catch the weekly (Monday) ferry to Vladivostok but this needed a bit more logistical work to make sure that we arrived in South Korea at the right time for us to catch the ferry so we opted for plan B.
Plan B was far more simple – a flight on China Air to Bejing and then a switch of planes to the aptly named Vladivostock Air to our destination. Plan B was put into action and we have booked economy seats on flights leaving Vancouver, Canada on 8th June at the ungodly hour of 03.00 arriving some 18 hours later on the other side of the Pacific and a day later having crossed the International Date Line.
So, we have container booked and paid for, bike service booked for Thursday this week and flights to Vladivostok. What is left to do before we are ready to ride west is completion of some shipping documents, book a hotel in Vladivostok and sort out our luggage so that we only take on the plane things that we need for the three week away from our bikes.
Once in Russia we will have to register our visa and then our next big task will be to try and get a Mongolian visa in Ulan Ude and we are busy trying to sort out a Letter of Invitation for this at the moment – but Mongolia is over a month away. For now our “home” is a Motel 6 in Fife, near Seattle and we are thankful for a good internet connection.
Our exciting day tomorrow consists of a trip to Walmart to get some provisions for the next few days – we can barely conceal our delight !
